Plan International - Give Differently

Plan International works in developing countries to end the cycle of poverty for children, developing solutions to ensure long-term sustainability. Their holiday "Give Differently" catalog offers opportunities to donate actual items needed by the communities where they work.

For the 2013 Holiday Gift Catalog, I illustrated the items that can be donated over photos from developing countries, showing both the need and the outcome.

PROJECT: 2013 Holiday Catalog illustrations

"We had a fantastic experience using Alli as our illustrator for our Holiday Gifts of Hope campaign. Alli was reliable, flexible, and produced high-quality work that was far better than we had anticipated. Her personable nature made her a joy to work with. We’re looking forward to partnering with her again in future campaigns!"

Plan International - How Gifts of Hope Change Lives

Plan International approached me for some illustration work for their Holiday 2013 "Gifts of Hope" catalog, including this small insert booklet that shows how your donation impacts those in need.

The illustrations were hand-drawn and accented with texture and a limited color palette. To help communicate that Plan International's Gifts of Hope change lives, I started the illustrations with very minimal color and added more and more color as the family's lives continued to improve. I'm thankful for the opportunity to create work for organizations making a difference in the world; for more information visit Plan International's website.

RISE 15 Year Report

RISE is an organization that works with children of incarcerated parents in Rhode Island. To commemorate their first 15 years of impact and to set up for the following 15, RISE asked me to create a booklet style report filled with photos and infographics. Thanks to RISE for the opportunity to work together!

Working with Alli was seamless. She is an intuitive listener, an organized communicator, and had a firmly yet gentle way of keeping us on task. She not only absorbed our vision and desire for the report, but she took it to another level. The balance of sensual imagery, direct quotes and easy to access data pictures sit well in the openess and space of a clean aesthetic - giving room to absorb it all. I think we produced a powerful tool that I am confident will have a positive impact on our ability to solicit support for our work.

Painted Wooden Signs

These hand-painted signs were created for Renaissance and are pretty simple to do yourself with only a few materials.

MATERIALS:

  • wood, cut to size
  • black wood stain (optional)
  • print-outs of lettering or design
  • white chalk
  • paintbrush
  • acrylic paint

Here's what I did:

  1. Since the wood pieces I used were from different sources and had slightly different colorings, I used a black wood stain to make all the pieces unified.
  2. I printed out the lettering to transfer to the wood by covering the back of the paper with white chalk. Then, I traced the paper printout letters with a ballpoint pen, pressing hard. This left a light chalk outline to help make the painting faster and easier.
  3. After the design was transferred, it was just a matter of painting all the letters in. I used a couple sizes of brushes and watered down my acrylic paint a tiny bit to help it flow better.

I love how these came out and would definitely recommend trying a similar project out yourself.
